California Gold Rush

The great California gold rush began on January 24, 1848, when James W. Marshall discovered a gold nugget in the American River while constructing a sawmill for John Sutter, a Sacramento agriculturalist. News of Marshall’s discovery brought thousands of immigrants to California from elsewhere in the United States and from other countries.

As many people both immigrants and americans came to california gold became more and more scarce. The California gold rush caused a massive population change and made California's population dramtically increase from about 1,000 people to over 20,000. California's population grew so swiftly that it was incorperated into the Union as the 31st state in America just two years after the Gold Rush.

After the Gold Rush California was home to many immigrants who would later spread throughout America growing their families and cultures throughout America. Many historians wonder what California would be like if the Gold Rush hadn't happened, would it still be so well known and diverse?, we may never know ,but we do know that it helped America grow and become a more diverse and open country. Despite the ethnic tensions it engendered, the Gold Rush forever changed the demographic face of California by making it one of the most ethnically diverse states in the Union by the middle of the 19th century.

The mass immigration that took place because of the Gold Rush helped America because it help put California in the Union, it stopped the labor shortage because most Americans at the time left their jobs to go look for gold ,so many immigrants took their spots and kept America's economy growing and made many towns boom into fast growing cities, also many more opportunities were opened for trade and investment as more and more immigrants came to settle in America, and lastly America became more diverse and less racist as people from all cultures were coming together to look for gold.
